Game and Alzheimer

Since 2008, our research center FM2J, show interest in the Alzheimer’s disease as far as Handicaps and Games is one of its research axis. Also because game hasn’t been associated to this disease in research, even though game appears as a useful intervention tool, it is used by gerontology professionals. We have to remind that the Alzheimer’s disease translates mainly into skills’ degeneration and behavior disorders.

FM2J has essentially conducted field experimentations in 6 Establishments of Accommodation for Dependent Elderly. They have organized several games’ sessions in these establishments with seniors affected by the Alzheimer’s disease. The aim of the research is to define what isa playful frame and what are the beneficial effects on the persons affected by this disease.

The game session resides mainly in 2 variables : the choice of the games and toys and the role of the professional. The choice of the game is totally free, a selection of several games is offered to the residents. This selection is established according to four main types of games : exercise games, symbolic games, assembly games and rules games. Each of these answers to a different skill level.

Generally, we observe that if the first session doesn’t still make sense, very quickly the patients get used to the frame and manage to deal with it progressively. Without going in further details, we observed positive effects on the anxiety, the behavior disorders, the cognitive stimulation of the patients but also on the professionals’ motivation.
